MOUNT RUSHMORE

Mount Rushmore is in the Black Hills in South Dakot, USA. It shows the heads of four famous US presidents.
It represents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln, four presidents who represents the first 150 years of American history.
It took 14 years to complete the sculpture. Minres used dynamite to make the heads. They used drills and chisels to sculpt the faces.
Mount Rushmore was created by the American sculptor Gutzon Borglum. He died in the final year of its construction. His son, Lincoln, finished the monument.
The sculptures are made of granite, a very hard rock. That is why miners, not artists, made the sculptures.
Those miners had to climb 506 steps to get to the top of the mountain. They wore harnesses and descended the mountain with cables.
